A recently widowed young woman once asked the Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin to paint her a picture by which she might dream. He was more than happy to comply, having suffered the deaths of five children himself. The painting was called The Isle of the Dead, one of the greatest symbolist paintings of all time. Unfortunately, one of the most evil people of all time thought so also, Adolph Hitler. Hitler did not see what Bocklin intended, but rather what he imagined the tomb of a megalomaniacal Aryan hero, namely himself, might look like.
The intent of my painting was to reclaim The Isle of the Dead from Adolph Hitler. Rather than a romantic fantasy of a heroic death, in my vision death becomes more of a magical mystery tour, a journey into a fantastical realm of imagination and unlimited possibilities.
