When the price of gold had reached its high point of almost $800 an ounce in the late 1970’s, I went to California to try my hand at placer mining. I knew a little bit about it because I had done some in Indiana, as well as reading and studying on the subject. While studying the history of placer mining, I came across several stories which may or may not have been apocryphal, about prospectors who had, in their wanderings, stumbled into wild places no one had ever been in before, where they found vast amounts of gold. In almost all the stories, they came back, told people they’d found a place of fabulous wealth, but refused to let anyone know where it was. Almost all those stories end with the prospector either leaving the territory or dying, without ever revealing the location. While I was in California, I heard similar stories from more than one old-timer. Lost Creek Canyon is a fanciful depiction of one of those places.
