The photo this was based on is one of those pictures I had seen dozens of times and realized I didn’t know as much about as I wished I had known. The young girl was my mother, with two of her cousins. My mother had been raised by her aunt for the first few years of her life, and her cousins were more siblings to her than cousins. When looking at the photograph I realized that I did not know which of her cousins these were. I had looked at that photo more than once with my mother, and I know she had told me they were her cousins and she probably had told me their names, but I didn’t remember. This was one of those instances in which I realized that history had been lost. My mother is no longer around to fill in the details about this photo. I know it was taken in the 1930s but apart from that I know little else. Where were they? Why was the photo staged in this particular manner? Why was my mother dressed in a way that didn’t seem quite appropriate to the setting she was in? Detai...
