Everyone knows Morgan la Fey. Fewer people seem to be aware of the legend of Nimue. Her legend was often conflated with that of The Lady of the Lake, as well as with Morgan la Fey. Nimue was a young sorceress brought to the court of King Arthur by King Pellinore. Merlin became completely infatuated with her. Nimue had no interest in Merlin, and was even frightened by him, but her desire to learn Merlin’s secrets was stronger than her fear. She strung him along long enough to learn the secret of the magic circle, wherein a person could be trapped alive and could never escape. Some of the legends say that after she learned Merlin’s secrets, Nimue trapped him in a tree, under a rock, or in a cave, and would occasionally visit him to learn more of his secrets.
