Most people think of Sitting Bull as a war leader of the Sioux against Custer; that was Crazy Horse's function, Sitting Bull was a spiritual leader. Something I always found disturbing about the photographs of the two men, Custer and Sitting Bull, was that Custer almost always held a firearm, while Sitting Bull held a "peace pipe." For a long while it seemed to me Custer was being given the dominant position and Sitting Bull the submissive through the symbols they wielded, but I no longer believe that is true. The main purpose of the pipe in Native American culture is not the recreational use of tobacco nor to make "peace" with the white man; it is a tool of spiritual power, the smoke acting as both offering to the Spirits of the World and symbol of man's own spirit. From my perspective Sitting Bull is holding the more powerful hand, life trumps death every time.
