Description
In front of the old farmhouse my wife and I have lived in for the last thirty years there was once a dirt road, now long abandoned, that ran through fields and woods to a one room schoolhouse. Thirty years ago the school, or what was left of it, was still standing. It was last a functioning school in the 1950’s. The steeple that housed the bell that once called students to class still stood.
Nostalgia was not the impetus for this painting but rather a reflection on what has been lost. The one room school was not our modern model of education that has more in common with Henry Ford’s model of industrial production. The one room school had multiple grades learning together, the older students often tutoring the younger ones. Education was a communal enterprise, everyone in it together. Too much of our present culture emphasizes individual strivings, each person in it for themselves.
