Description
The first few years of my life I lived on a small farm in Indiana, before moving to the big city. I had a dog named Sandy, who I just barely remember. My mother used to tell me stories about Sandy and his relationship to me. She told me that she could put me in the yard with Sandy and know that I would be completely safe; no one would dare approach me as long as he was there. Once a salesman supposedly tried to come through the yard to the front door, and Sandy placed himself between me and the salesman, and made it very clear that he had come as far as he was welcome to come. I never knew whether this story was literal or a bit of hyperbole, but looking at that old photograph, I believe it was closer to literal. I had never realized what Sandy was actually doing in this picture. I don’t know who the photographer was, but it’s apparent from the photograph that Sandy was suspicious of the camera and its intent. Just like my mother said that Sandy often did, he was placing himself between me and whatever he perceived might be a threat.
